Great Britain

British Isles lie in the north – west of Europe.

The official name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and a lot of smaller islands. The territory of the country is 244, 820 square kilometers.

The capital of the UK is London; the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh; the capital of Wales is Cardiff; the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

People in the UK are called British. There are also the Welsh, the Scots, and the Irish.

The UK is washed by the North Sea, the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Irish Sea.

The climate of the country is damp and mild.

The UK landscape is very varied. The Grampians are in Scotland, the Pennines are in the north of England, the Cambrians are in Wales. The highest mountains are Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales.

There are 6 beautiful lakes in England. This part is called “Lake District”. Windermere is the largest among them. Other major lakes are Loch Lomond, Loch Ness.

The main rivers are the Severn, the Thames, the Trent, and the Mersey.

Great Britain is rich in coal, iron, ore and some other mineral resources.
